ENE-5: Generic warp drives violate the null energy condition
The positive-energy warp claims of 2021 are not what the press said they were.

The result
Generic warp drives violate the null energy condition. For the general Natário class of warp metrics, the NEC is violated somewhere for any nonzero velocity, superluminal or not, and with it the weak, strong and dominant conditions. The three 2021 positive-energy claims (Lentz, Bobrick and Martire, Fell and Heisenberg) checked energy density only for the co-moving Eulerian observers, which does not establish the WEC; the paper also reports specific calculational errors, including that Lentz's construction does not actually solve the Einstein equations
What it forbids or costs

Who it bites
Physics proposals
- VIOLATES: Alcubierre 1994: the warp drive metric. Alcubierre's metric is the founding member of the Natário class (unit lapse, flat slices, shift along $x$), and Santiago, Schuster and Visser prove the NEC is violated for any such flow with nonzero velocity; their section on the Alcubierre case does it explicitly.
- VIOLATES: Bobrick and Martire 2021: physical warp drives. Named in the entry as one of the three 2021 claims that checked only the co-moving Eulerian density; Santiago, Schuster and Visser prove the null energy condition fails for the whole Natário class the axisymmetric examples belong to, and the paper's non-Natário members carry negative density by its own formulae
- VIOLATES: Fell and Heisenberg 2021: positive energy from hidden geometric structure. Named in the entry: positivity established for the co-moving Eulerian observers only, which the paper's own eigenvalue analysis confirms
- VIOLATES: Lentz 2021: hyper-fast positive-energy solitons. Named in the entry: the Eulerian density was checked for one class of observers, and the Einstein equations were not solved
- VIOLATES: Natário 2002: warp drive with zero expansion. ENE-5 is a theorem about this class by name: for generic Natário warp drives the NEC is violated for any nonzero velocity, and the zero-expansion drive is treated as its own case in the proof.
- VIOLATES: Van Den Broeck 1999: the pocket geometry. The slices are not flat, so the geometry is outside the Natário class the theorem is stated for; but region IV is literally an Alcubierre wall, for which Santiago, Schuster and Visser prove NEC violation, so the theorem bites on the part of the geometry that is in the class.
- DODGES: Fuchs et al. 2024: the constant-velocity physical warp shell. The entry's own escape hatch: non-unit lapse and non-flat slices put the metric outside the Natário class the theorem covers, and the paper says so
- DODGES: Warp drives in modified gravity. The theorem is proved in general relativity for the Natário class. The same paper's abstract says the geometric convergence conditions are violated even in modified gravity, so the escape is narrow: a modified-gravity warp drive must accept a geometric sector that focuses like negative energy.
- SATISFIES: NASA Eagleworks warp field interferometer. No positive-energy claim; the null-condition violation of the Alcubierre bubble is accepted
- SATISFIES: White et al. 2021: the worldline-numerics Casimir pattern. Claims no positive-energy drive; its bubble is Alcubierre's and violates the null condition as the entry says, which the paper does not dispute
Fictional drives
- SILENT: Campbell's Islands of Space (1931): where the word came from. A bubble with unit lapse and a carried interior is in the Natário class and violates the NEC; the novel gives no metric to check and the constraint is unaddressed.
- SILENT: Death's End: curvature propulsion (Liu Cixin, 2010). Santiago, Schuster and Visser show every Natário-class drive violates the NEC at any nonzero velocity, subluminal included; whether Liu's engine is in that class is not stated and the novel does not address it.
- SILENT: Elite Dangerous: the frame shift drive (Frontier Developments, 2014). Supercruise is Natário-class in everything but name; the NEC theorem is never touched.
- SILENT: EVE Online: the warp drive (CCP Games, 2003). The bubble is Natário-class in everything but name; the NEC theorem is never touched.
- SILENT: Futurama: the Planet Express ship's dark matter engines (1999 onward). Cubert's mechanism is Natário-class by description; the NEC theorem is never touched.
- SILENT: Star Trek: warp drive (1966 onward). The warp field is in the Natário class in everything but name, so the NEC theorem applies; never addressed.
- SILENT: Stellaris: warp, hyperlane and wormhole (Paradox Development Studio, 2016). The warp mode is Natário-class in everything but name; the NEC theorem is never touched.
- SILENT: The Orville: quantum drive (2017 onward). The bubble is Natário-class in everything but name; the NEC theorem is never touched.
- ENGAGES: Star Citizen: quantum drive and jump points. The developer's bubble is an Alcubierre-type flow, the class the entry's theorem covers, and the lore's negative energy density agrees with the theorem that any such flow violates the null energy condition, superluminal or not. The agreement is stated by the developer as a fuel requirement rather than as a theorem.
